 2013/4, Trimester 1, Face-to-Face, Napier University
| Occurrence: | 001 | | Primary mode of delivery: | Face-to-Face | | Location of delivery: | NAPIER | | Member of staff responsible for delivering module: | MR EUAN WINTON | | Module Organiser: | | | Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach: |
Learning & teaching methods including their alignment to LOsEach taught input uses a wide variety of audio-visual resources, group discussion and activity to foster group engagement in a studio environment. You will undertake studio design project briefs (LO1) that will require visual development and modelling in a socio-cultural context (LO3,4) where you will apply taught enthnographic design research techniques (LO2). This will culminate in the creation of a digital design and/or arts outcome using appropriate software (LO5). You will also undertake peer reviews to develop your self reflective and critical skills (LO6). Embedding of employability/ PDP/ scholarship skillsThis module promotes the development of visual communication skills (reflective evaluation), oral communication skills (presentation/ group debate) and problem based learning. Guest speakers offer opportunities for evaluating the application of skills in industry. Students are supported in planning, recording, and reflecting upon their experiences to develop employability and self awareness while understanding how their transferable skills might be applied in new settings. Assessment (formative and summative)You will undertake two studio design projects which will require the submission of design research (represented in sketchbooks, portfolio, and visual presentation) visual development work (sketchbooks and digital visual exploration) and creative design and/or arts outcomes on digital platforms (see section 18 - length/volume). Formative assessment will precede the submission and/or presentation of completed design assignments. You will be asked to report on your directed study task and feedback will be given to develop your confidence and allow practise of public speaking and voicing opinions. You will be asked to present your directed study task and summative assessment given of submitted work during critiques and feedback tutorials.Research/ teaching linkagesAll team members undertake scholarly activity with design projects and organisations allowing currency and credibility of input. Staff contribute to published research, exhibitions and symposiums that keep abreast of industry and arts developments.Supporting equality and diversityAccessibility is built into the programme. All module materials (visuals, handouts, WebCT) are designed inline with Napier's accessibility policy, and guidelines from the British Dyslexia Association and TechDis. WebCT is used to cater for a diverse student group.Timetabled academic supervision is available each taught week of the module to support students.InternationalisationThe module examines international precedents in design and digital arts.

What you will learn and what this module is about:
On this module you will generate, model and present creative proposals to digital design problems, which demonstrate a comprehension of socio-cultural and contemporary design issues. You will critically analyse the requirements of a project brief, by reference to design precedents, and using design ethnographic research methods to explore social contexts and human constraints, in order to instigate appropriate and original design proposals. The module will enable the student to identify and evaluate ethical issues in design, and to apply these to the design process.
Description of module content:
The user and communities will be at the centre of projects. Working in the design studio, you will make use of both primary and secondary research sources for underpinning design opportunities. You will examine working within digital environments focusing on human design needs as well as the branded experience in such a context, to create design and digital arts outcomes in accordance to given creative project briefs.
Learning Outcomes for module:
Upon completion of this module, you will be able to:LO1: Analyse given creative design briefs LO2: Apply ethnographic design research methods to inform the design process.LO3: Create design outcomes within socio-cultural contextsLO4: Visualise and model appropriate creative solutions to complex design problemsLO5: Apply appropriate design and digital arts software to creative outcomesLO6: Appraise the design process through visual and verbal presentations, and via critiques.
