What you will learn and what this module is about:

Studying at an overseas university for a part of your programme can be highly beneficial to your education, but it is not always easy to find a partner with a directly matching curriculum. This module allows you to be flexible in your activities while studying abroad in achieving learning outcomes that can broadly match to those of the core modules of your home programme.

Description of module content:

To undertake this module you will need to have been accepted for student exchange programme at an overseas university as agreed with your tutor. In cases where the student experience does not map directly to the modules on your BDes programme at Edinburgh Napier, you can consolidate design work and other creative projects for the submission of a portfolio of creative output to be agreed with your home and overseas tutorial team, and allowing for activity which enables the completion of the learning outcomes.

Different institutions offer a range of courses within their programmes spanning across the spectrum of art & design programmes and in addition to your principal programme these may include activities not regularly on offer at Edinburgh Napier. On previous exchange programmes students have engaged with life-drawing, ceramic design and crafts and abstract creative exercises to complement their skills.

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO1: Apply and accurately assess research methods to inform the creative process
LO2: Interpret and apply international precedents to creative methods in relation to contemporary design and/or architectural practice in a socio-cultural context
LO3: Implement design management sequences and production processes from conception to realisation, with reference to the context of materials and technology, components, costing and sustainability.
LO4: Examine and critically reflect on the use of converging media in contemporary design cultures and contexts.
LO5: Apply knowledge of virtual visualisation and/or modelling methods to include detailing and specification of technical elements to an advanced level
LO6: Apply presentation techniques that transcend international language barriers to provide a rationale for original design proposals for a given context with information hierarchies using appropriate media
LO7: Evaluate and critically reflect on design outcomes in an international context.
