Description of module content:

In this module you will develop the necessary skills to work as a commentator or pundit in a broad range of popular sports. It checks on the industry standards and encourages you to pursue on practical activities to develop your abilities. You will critically appraise commentary and produce your own commentary and punditry to a professional level. You will develop the skills and ability to commentate with authority and credibility at both a written and video / audio level. The module also includes developments in the modern sport industry, such as data analytics, tactics, sports science. They will be studied along with the ethical and commercial dimension and major issues faced in different global sports.You will see that keeping abreast of rolling news is essential to develop an in-depth knowledge of the game. So, you will critically engage with various platforms and understand demand for commentators and pundits. In addition, you will learn the opportunities they provide for a freelancer sports journalist.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Critically engage with production processes to create professional quality media commentary around sport events.

LO2: Demonstrate a critical understanding of the growth in the role of sports commentary and punditry across mainstream media and social media.

LO3: Exercise substantial autonomy and creativity in developing and using journalistic and digital production skills demanded of the commentator and pundit.

LO4: Critically assess the implications and apply the law on defamation and privacy for Journalists when commenting a sports event.

LO5: Critically explore and apply the regulations of popular sports, the use of data analytics, tactics and the role of the regulatory bodies when commenting on sports.

LO6: Reflect critically on sports media coverage and demonstrate the ability to identify the current major issues related to commentary and punditry in sports.

Face To Face Lecture 12 Informative sessions for the input of specific subjects, supported by learning technologies will allow you to understand the role of pundits and commentators.
Face To Face Tutorial 24 You will combine experiential learning by appearing as a pundit and commentating on a video panel on a sports event or a news controversy issue related to the football industry. Supervised workshop practice (video, audio, and writing) will enable you to develop your sports punditry at all levels. Through reading and discussion, you will critically engage with major news stories and different angles to approach them.
Online Guided independent study 164 During your guide independent learning time, you will produce a digital portfolio of columns or blog entries with different formats on sports news which will demonstrate your critical engagement with the main issues in the industry. You will also produce an academic essay on the role of the commentator in the public sphere.
