What you will learn and what this module is about:

In this module you will learn about the law relating to child welfare in a private and public context. You will analyse practical and theoretical aspects of civil and criminal law. The child's position within the family unit, the wider community and the state will be explored and there will be some comparative analysis with the approach adopted in other jurisdictions.

Description of module content:

The tension between welfare and rights; the impact of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child; welfare within the family unit; issues facing young persons (health and safety, education, personal capacity); state intervention and welfare; child protection (civil and criminal aspects); theory and practice.

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO1: Critically evaluate the principles, sources and vocabulary of child welfare, rights and protection;
LO2: Critically analyse practical and theoretical legal issues associated with the rights and obligations surrounding children and young persons;
LO3: Identify and apply arguments concerning the welfare, rights and wider obligations owed to vulnerable children in specific situations;
LO4: Analyse and construct legal argument both orally and in writing;
LO5: Apply expertise in legal research and the use of traditional and electronic retrieval resources in relevant areas of law and work to deadlines.
