Module Organiser:
Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
Classes are in tutorial form and highly interactive. Emphasis is placed on practising speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Extensive use of WebCT Vista in conjunction with other multimedia resources facilitates practice, revision and independent learning.

Informal formative feedback is given continuously in the interactive classes, via guided written work and practice presentations.

Summative assessments take place in weeks 13 (listening and presentation) and 14/15 (reading and writing).

The assessments are designed to be accessible to students from a range of different backgrounds and first languages.

Key employability skills embedded in the module are: general communication skills; presentation skills; IT skills.

The module fosters international understanding and integration through its inter-activity, subject matter and the nature of its population.

What you will learn and what this module is about:

This module will build on and enhance your existing basic knowledge of English and extend the range of everyday situations in which participants can communicate proficiently. It will introduce you to aspects of UK culture and society relating to daily life.

Description of module content:

Basic grammar, including the past and future tenses, modals, word order; vocabulary relating to everyday topics; expressing opinions, agreement and disagreement; practice in role play and writing skills. Cultural background on the UK.

LO1: use English to communicate about events in the future and past
LO2: ask for information in English and understand the reply
LO3: express opinions including agreement or disagreement
LO4: maintain a dialogue on a prepared topic using simple but correct language
LO5: write simple sentences and longer texts accurately
