Description of module content:

This module combines two types of knowledge: declarative (knowing that) and procedural (knowing how). The module is designed to help you manage the complex communication and interpersonal tasks that you will encounter in today’s linguistically and culturally diverse global work environment. You will acquire a deeper understanding of theories and perspectives with regards to language, culture and communication, and you will be able to apply these to different business contexts. You will not only be more aware of the challenges and issues facing today’s multicultural/multilingual workplaces but be able to apply theories learnt on this module to address these problems. You will have a good grasp, theoretically and in practice, of different genres of business communication texts/practices. Thus, you will develop your understandings of diverse workplace settings and your skills for handling the associated challenges.

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO1: Explain and differentiate theoretical approaches to language, culture and communication issues and understand their importance in real-world business contexts.

LO3: Apply your knowledge and skills to produce examples of written, oral and digital media communication texts and explain why these are appropriate for use in business contexts.
LO4: Critically analyse workplace communication practices more broadly by bringing together a variety of theories and approaches.
