Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
Classes are in tutorial form and are highly interactive. Emphasis is placed on practising speaking, listening reading and writing skills, revision and independent learning. The portfolio will contain an action plan and learning log, a record of language notes and notes on current affairs, completed assignments (written and oral) and research carried out as part of the module.

Key employability skills are: time and workload management, communication skills, research skills, and the ability to argue a case or defend a position in speaking or writing in English, as well as familiarity with a variety of other cultures.

Informal feedback is given during the tutorials. The portfolio contains both formative tasks (guided research, language practice) and summative assessments (tasks and class tests).

The assessments are designed to be accessible to students from a range of different backgrounds and first languages. Student Support Services can provide extra help as required.

What you will learn and what this module is about:

This module develops your professional language and communication skills (equivalent to Common European Framework of Reference B2) in the context of professional practice and your understanding of contemporary issues and current affairs in the UK. In addition to consolidation of intermediate linguistic structures students will be introduced to language for specific purposes plus related idiom and appropriate register.

Description of module content:

Needs analysis and individual action plan; review of intermediate grammar and introduction and practice of upper-intermediate grammar; acquisition of professional vocabulary; structured and supported independent research into selected aspects of life in the UK, focussing on news and current affairs

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO1: understand complex and sustained authentic texts in English from a variety of sources with some assistance
LO2: communicate spontaneously and naturally with good grammatical control in speaking and writing
LO3: use effective argumentation with clearly linked ideas
LO4: apply his/her language skills in researching aspects of current affairs and contemporary issues in the UK
LO5: prepare a strategy for enhancing his/her own language learning and appraise his/her own progress
