Description of module content:

This module will provide you with a thorough understanding of specific theories of culture and communication, cultural systems and dimensions offered by major intercultural researchers and the critiques they have received in order to contribute to a more widening debate of intercultural theory and research. Taught sessions include the following topics: 1) Understanding the Notion of Culture, 2) Understanding the Notion of Intercultural Business Communication, 3) Cultural Systems 1, 4) Cultural Systems 2, 5) Intercultural Workshop 1, 6) Cultural Heterogeneity 1, 7) Cultural Heterogeneity 2, 8) Intercultural Workshop 2.

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO1: To critically compare a range of competing theories that explain the notion of culture.
LO2: To assess the effectiveness of Intercultural Business Communication through a range of business, intercultural and communication strategies.
LO3: To explain theoretical approaches underpinning specific cultural behaviours and 'cultural value systems' demonstrated by specific national cultures.
LO4: To evaluate theoretical approaches through their practical applications.
LO5: To assess the significance of theoretical approaches and their relevance to the heterogeneity of cultures.
