Description of module content:

Antenatal and postnatal care utilising the principles of women centred, compassionate care in a multicultural context including: Initial consultation/history taking, health and social assessment, risk assessment, care planning and record keeping, TRAK, data protection. Preconception care. Infant and Maternal Nutrition

Antenatal screening. Physiology of the puerperium. Postnatal examination. Adult resuscitation

Fundamental midwifery skills and underpinning physiology including;
TPR & BP physiology & control of BP. Urinalysis. Abdominal palpation. Infection control, universal precautions, introduction to cleanliness champions. Bed making, care in bed. Venepuncture. Efficient Moving and Handling. Managing violence and aggression.

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO.1. Develop an awareness of the key principles involved in the provision of pre pregnancy care and support.
LO.2. Outline the different maternal and fetal screening tests.
LO.3. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to care for women in the antenatal and postnatal period by completion of scenario based activities.
LO.4 Understand the rationale for types and frequency of antenatal care within a diverse context.
LO.5. Recognise the communication skills necessary to support women and their families in a
compassionate manner in the antenatal and postnatal period.
