Description of module content:

The module is designed to guide you through a number of important developments in the music of the latter half of the 20th Century up until present day. You will explore musical evolution in terms of the development of particular styles, approaches and conventions. Additionally, the module will consider the importance of issues that reach beyond the purely musical, across other art forms (including visual art, architecture and dance) and social and political contexts, for example the aftermath of the Second World War. Topics to be covered include chance techniques, indeterminacy, graphic notation, electronic music, total serialism, minimalism, sound art and extended techniques. Consideration will also be given to crossovers between classical, jazz and popular music styles. A practical composition-based assessment will further develop your creative and technical insight into the music of the period. You will develop and apply these skills into a more creative compositional thinking, with a written component that provides a rationale and reflection on the creative process.
