Learning & Teaching methodsThis module will be delivered using an online learning approach via VLE (LOs 1 to 6). Collaborative learning will be promoted through the use of discussion groups on VLE facilitated by the module team. The VLE units will be offered in sequential order to guide you through the module content in a paced manner (LOs 1 to 6). Synchronous and asynchronous online discussions with peers and lecturers will support your learning and activities will be provided throughout the module to promote active learning (LOs 1 to 6). The use of VLE in this module gives greater flexibility so you can choose to learn at a time which suits you. Online tutorials and the use of Elluminate will offer the opportunity for you to get together with fellow students in small groups to learn through interactive teaching sessions which aim to build on the content of VLE (LOs 1 to 6). LO 1-6 There are three distinct units in the module which will cover all of the material identified in the learning outcomes. A wide variety of teaching and learning methods will be used including audio-visual resources, group discussion and activity to foster student engagement. You will be required to learn independently as well as within your class group. Face-to-face activity within the module will take place in week 1 and Elluminate will be used for group discussions (x3).Embedding of employability/PDP/Scholarly skillsThis module aims to enhance student employability skills by promoting student autonomy, encouraging active participation in online discussions and other activities such as the use of Elluminate for online group tutorials, support and feedback. The use of reflection and applying creative solutions to ethical situations in the healthcare environment will be promoted throughout the module and underpins the remit of the assessment for this module. Engagement with and reflection on personal and professional values related to healthcare practice will be promoted.Assessment Formative assessment: The formative assessment is a 500 word summary of an ethical situation from your practice and the ethical issues it raised. This is to provide you with an opportunity to test your understanding of what is meant by ethical issues and ethical dilemmas. Once the summary has been completed (by Week 7) you will be able to gain feedback on your work from your Academic Supervisor via VLE e-mail. The skills developed in undertaking this activity will be useful in the following weeks of the module and in preparing the Summative assessment. Summative Assessment:The summative assessment consists of two elements: (1) a 4,500 word essay, which will be on an ethical situation from your practice and can be from a discipline specific perspective. Evaluation of the situation, in light of the ethical theories, principles, relevant law and the justification of the key ethical arguments, enables demonstration of achievement of the module outcome, and (2) . The design and development of a potential PowerPoint presentation and explanatory notes that you would might give to other students outlining your rationale and explanations for decisions taken to resolve the ethical dilemma outlined in assessment (1) (500)Students will be required to access and retrieve relevant literature, prepare, organise and discuss the key ethical, legal and professional issues concerning their topic in the essay. The assessment is intended to examine the broad scope of the module content, address the learning outcomes and enable the students to develop their knowledge in an area of healthcare practice which has presented particular ethical challenges.Research/teaching linkageLinks to relevant research and evidenced based literature will be provided throughout the module. Students are required to access and examine relevant literature for learning and assessment purposes.Supporting equality and diversityAll teaching, learning and assessment materials are available on VLE to cater for diversity in student groups. VLE delivery and asynchronicity of discussions provide flexible access and contact with students and staff. Students will be allocated an Academic Supervisor who will support them in the context of VLE activity and content and assessment related matters. Special needs are assessed individually and appropriate support is provided. InternationalisationHealthcare is a worldwide requirement and professional, ethical and legal issues relevant to this are taken into account throughout the module. The module is generic in nature as it is taking place in an international context and reference will be made to professional and legal issues relevant to the topics from the students' country of origin and professional body. Online discussions promote sharing of perspectives, enhancing knowledge and personal development.

What you will learn and what this module is about:

This module will enable you to learn about and examine professional, ethical and legal issues relevant to healthcare and will provide you with the opportunity to apply relevant theory to your own day-to-day clinical practice. You will be encouraged to take a person-centred approach to healthcare provision and to examine the values that underpin your practice in terms of delivering compassionate care. You will be required to actively engage with the subject matter and your peers as well reviewing, critically reflecting upon and refine your future practice.

Description of module content:

You will be introduced to ethical theories and principles relevant to health care; these include utilitarianism, deontology, the ethics of care, values-based care and the bio-ethical principles. Other topics addressed in the module are responsibility and accountability, professional regulation, record keeping, consent, refusal of treatment, confidentiality, patient rights, and restraint,. Adults with incapacity and other related issues, such as, the use and abuse of power, and advocacy are also considered. Relevant professional, ethical and legal implications will be related to all areas considered in the module.
