What you will learn and what this module is about:

This is the first of two modules which will facilitate the completion of the NES (2007) Core & Speciality Specific Competencies for Anaesthesia Assistants. Through this 40 credit module you will learn both theory and practice related to anaesthesia and the care of patients during the pre and peri-operative phase of their treatment. From this increase in your knowledge base, your role within the perioperative environment should be enhanced.

Description of module content:

Pre-operative Assessment (including ASA scoring); Airway assessment and management; Preparation of patients for theatre; relevant anatomy and physiology including respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous and renal systems; aspects of patient care; involvement in common anaesthetic procedures; involvement in adult airway management; care of anaesthetic machine, monitoring, and related equipment; care of equipment relevant to anaesthesia; peri-operative monitoring and patient care; regional anaesthesia; involvement with routine drugs and fluid therapy; and involvement in emergency management

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO1: Critically engage using a problem solving approach in managing anaesthetic and recovery patients
LO2: Demonstrate the application of anatomy and physiology to the management of the patient's clinical condition
