ECTS credit value: 10

Module code: SES11137
Module leader: Arthur Bossi
School School of Applied Sciences
Subject area group: Sport Exercise and Health Science
Prerequisites

There are no pre-requisites for this module to be added

Description of module content:

This module considers exercise programming design, prescription, understanding and delivery for individuals with health conditions. It will include theoretical knowledge and practical experience. More specifically in this module you will learn how to design safe, effective and evidence-based interventions for clinical populations through gaining practical knowledge, using current guidelines and also appraising published scientific literature. You will develop the ability of how to consider multiple factors (environmental, physical, psychological, medical etc) to prescribe optimal exercise interventions in terms of modes, frequency, intensity, durations and how you can design progressions and regressions accordingly. A particular focus will be given to evaluating contraindications, identifying risks, and monitoring adverse signs as well as optimally monitoring and evaluating the outcomes of exercise interventions. The module content and assessments are designed to achieve the above goals.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Critically appraise scientific evidence and use current guidelines to inform evidence-based exercise plans that are safe and effective.

LO2: Analyse and evaluate an individual’s medical, clinical and assessment profile while taking into consideration environmental, psychological, social and cultural needs.

LO3: Critically evaluate and apply scientific knowledge and practical skills regarding the risks and benefits of exercise to develop and lead individual and condition specific exercise treatment goals.

LO4: Demonstrate a critical awareness and apply theoretical knowledge and practical skills to evaluate contraindications to exercise and lead individuals with comorbidities in exercise programmes.

LO5: Undertake a critical review and apply theoretical knowledge and practical skills to identify and monitor adverse signs and symptoms during an exercise session and recovery and take appropriate action where necessary.

LO6: Critically review methods of monitoring and evaluating the outcomes of exercise interventions.

Student Activity (Notional Equivalent Study Hours (NESH))
Mode of activityLearning & Teaching ActivityNESH (Study Hours)NESH Description
Face To Face Seminar 22 Our seminars will be lecturer-facilitated but will allow you to explore and apply theory introduced during the pre-seminar readings to consolidate your knowledge and understanding. The majority of the discussion will be student-led and happen within small groups of around 5-6 students in a group, though the group composition will change each week. To get full benefit from the seminar and to support other students, you are expected to come prepared to engage with the seminar material.
Face To Face Practical classes and workshops 24 Our practical sessions will apply the theory, knowledge and skills learned in the seminars in a practical context with human participants.
Face To Face External visits 28 Guided external visits will be arranged to practical settings such as NHS sites, clinics and exercise centres as well as third sector organisations (Thistle foundation, Edinburgh Leisure) where the students will be able to observe professional practice and also be involved into supervised activities.
Online Guided independent study 126 Each week reading materials and resources will be issued on Moodle (these will also be shared via the Module leganto list at the beginning of the module should you wish more time to engage with the materials). You are expected to read and reflect on the essential reading material which can be discussed during the seminar sessions. Resources to help you to read and take productive study notes created by the University's Academic Skills team can be accessed on the module moodle page.
