Core Module Information
Module title: Pathophysiology and Clinical Management

SCQF level: 11:
SCQF credit value: 20.00
ECTS credit value: 10

Module code: SES11138
Module leader: Amanda Pitkethly
School School of Applied Sciences
Subject area group: Sport Exercise and Health Science
Prerequisites

There are no pre-requisites for this module to be added

Description of module content:

In this module you will cover the aetiology, statistics and treatments for a range of health conditions (cancer, cardiovascular, frailty, renal, mental health, metabolic, musculoskeletal, neurological and respiratory). During the module we will focus on the underlying pathophysiology of all these conditions. This module will highlight the relevant treatment side effects and key practical issues related to exercising with these conditions.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Critically explore human anatomy and integrative systems physiology and knowledge of the pathophysiological base for all conditions.

LO2: Critically analyse and evaluate relevant risk factors, signs and symptoms and how pathology might impact on activity of daily living and exercise for all conditions.

LO3: Examine the elements of common diagnostic procedures and criteria for all conditions and critically explore the purpose, rationale and clinical outcomes of these therapeutic interventions and allied health treatments.

LO4: Evaluate the impact of conditions on the physiological responses to common forms of exercise, including aerobic exercise, resistance exercise, flexibility and activities of daily living.

LO5: Critically evaluate the effect of surgical medical and pharmacological treatments on exercise capacity and physiological responses to exercise.

LO6: Draw conclusions on the adaptations to exercise training and how these are modulated by conditions and common treatments

Student Activity (Notional Equivalent Study Hours (NESH))
Mode of activityLearning & Teaching ActivityNESH (Study Hours)NESH Description
Independent Learning Lecture 11 Lectures will be pre-recorded and uploaded weekly on the VLE at least 5 days prior to the seminar to allow you to access at a time most suitable for you. The lecture recording will include subtitles/close-captioning.
Face To Face Seminar 33 Our weekly seminars will be lecturer-facilitated but will allow you to explore and apply theory introduced during the pre-recorded lectures to consolidate your knowledge and understanding. The majority of the discussion will be student-led and happen within small groups of around 5-6 students in a group, though the group composition will change each week. To get full benefit from the seminar and to support other students, you are expected to come prepared having engaged with the lecture mater
Face To Face Practical classes and workshops 6 You will take part in two group practical sessions to look at the clinical implications of working with various clients in a gym and circuit setting.
Online Guided independent study 150 Throughout the trimester, you are expected to structure in time to reflect upon the learning you have undertaken in your scheduled sessions and to complete your essential reading. You are encouraged to read more widely around the topics you are studying and engage in Moodle activities and resources. You will need to ensure that you have sufficient time to prepare and plan for your assessment tasks.

Assessment
Type of Assessment Weighting % LOs covered Week due Length in Hours/Words Description
Report 50 4~5~6 Week 12 , WORDS= 1500 words Drawing on the literature, you will submit a written report on a multimorbid case. The combination of health conditions that are present for your particular case study will be from the CEP-UK scope of practice. You will list the relevant treatments (and related side effects) for this multimorbid condition, detail the impact of the particular multimorbid case on the physiological responses to various forms of exercise, and describe how exercise training would be adapted to address these issues. You must pass all elements and components of assessment in this module in order to achieve an overall pass for this module.
Oral Assessment 50 1~2~3 Exam Period HOURS= 15 minutes At the end of the module, you will participate in a two way dialogue with your module tutor/s. During the dialogue you will be asked questions on any of the health conditions that have been taught across the module. You will be expected to demonstrate knowledge on the aetiology, risk factors, signs and symptoms, statistical prevalence and clinical treatments for the health conditions you are asked about. You must pass all elements and components of assessment in this module in order to achieve an overall pass for this module.
Component 1 subtotal: 50
Component 2 subtotal: 50
