Description of module content:

You will teach a selection of classes across the senior and broad general education phases of secondary school. You will be supported by your mentor, who will gradually withdraw support as you develop your confidence and competence and will increase your contact time towards a maximum of 18 classes per week. You will be required to undertake six critical incident analyses, allowing you to reflect on key moments of professional development and set development targets. You will be prepared for this through lectures before placement. You will be assessed against learning outcomes and demonstrate achievement of the learning outcomes as per GTCS standards. A 20-credit module incorporates 200 notional study hours; however, to meet GTCS requirements, this module requires you to undertake 330 hours of practical learning experience within a school setting.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: consistently apply the knowledge, skills and values necessary for planning and delivering sequences of lessons across the secondary school curriculum with a particular focus on the broad general education (BGE) phase.

LO2: effectively undertake the duties expected of a secondary teacher under the limited guidance of qualified practitioners such as: planning sequences of lessons, classroom management, assessment, tracking and monitoring, and reporting. This should be consistent with the General Teaching Council for Scotland's Standards for Provisional Registration (GTCS SPR).

LO3: successfully exercise professional autonomy and initiative consistent with expectations set out in the GTCS's Standards for Provisional Registration

LO4: successfully apply the knowledge and skills of critical incident analysis (CIA) and to integrate theory, professional values and the insights gained from CIA into a clear pathway for future professional development

Other PLACEMENT 165 You will undertake the duties of a qualified teacher with limited support and guidance from an experienced mentor. As the placement goes on, this support will be gradually withdrawn until you are confidently and consistently teaching sequences of lessons across the secondary age range but with a specific focus on the broad general phase (BGE). You will reflect on your progress and seek feedback from your mentor and other colleagues to improve your practice.
Face To Face Guided independent study 33 You will attend to professional reading to support you in your critical incident analysis and in response to the indentification of your development needs throughout the placement. Your school mentor, colleagues, peers and your University tutor can be used as sources for useful texts specifically addressing your development needs.
Face To Face Lecture 2 You will receive two lectures on critical incident analysis prior to the beginning of placement. These will set out the general principles of CIA and give examples of how useful CIA analyses can contribute to professional development.
