Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
There is a blended approach to learning and teaching in this module. Student learning will be supported via interactive on-line learning materials accessed via Moodle (the University’s online learning platform) and face to face contact incorporating tutorials and associated clinical skills sessions. Theoretical aspects of unresolvable alterations of health (for example cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cognitive impairment, cancer) and impact these have on health and well-being across the lifespan will be introduced on line (LO 1). The assessment, interpretation and appropriate responses to these alterations in health and the evidence, guidelines and strategies that support interventions and determine care for adults will be introduced on line (LO 2, 3). This will encourage students to consider the impact on individuals, families and carers in all care settings and how you as a nurse work co productively with individuals to promote health and well-being for individuals with an alteration in health status (LO 5). Students will develop compassionate communication techniques that establish effective communication with adults with an alteration in health status (LO4). Online materials will address global and national strategies and priorities (LO 3) and will examine the underpinning evidence.
The online learning will prepare students for the face to face tutorials where scenarios and case studies will be used to contextualise the theory amassed online using a scenario based learning (SBL) approach (LO 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5). The SBL approach will encourage students to identify areas of enquiry of interest to them through exploration of the scenarios. New areas of enquiry will be identified at each tutorial session for students to choose from to submit for summative assessment.
Within the tutorials students will explore enhanced communication and compassionate caring skills applied to the scenarios and case studies (LO 4, 5). Students will learn associated clinical skills and participate in module related simulated patient scenarios within the Simulation and Clinical Skills Centre to apply the theory amassed to near life scenarios (LO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5). Feedback will be provided by lecturers and student groups within the skills activities.
Feedback will be provided during the face-to-face tutorial groups and online sessions and discussions. Students will be required to be self-directing and take responsibility for their own learning, supported by the module leader.

Formative Assessment:
Group feedback will be given on one scenario summary developed as part of your course work submitted in week 8.

Summative Assessment:
Portfolio LO: 1- 5
This will be in the form of course work 3,500 word in length which will be submitted in week 15.

Description of module content:

Within this module you will apply your knowledge of anatomy and physiology to explore the altered physiology that results from an alteration in health status (for example cardiovascular disease, neurological disease, cognitive impairment, cancer). You will appraise the knowledge and skills required to assess individuals with alteration in health, interpret results and review appropriate interventions. You will critically explore the national and international guidelines, strategies and evidence that guide interventions and promote evidence based practice. Anticipatory care and care planning will be appraised. You will enhance your communication and compassionate care skills by critically exploring different approaches to difficult conversations, communication and compassionate care.
You will have the opportunity to practice associated clinical skills and scenario based skills teaching within the Centre for Simulation and Clinical Skills to contextualise the theory to practice.
