Description of module content:

This module introduces the technical specifications for the buildings as set in current Scottish Building Standards for domestic and non-domestic buildings. Part 2 of the module covers Environment and Fire sections of the BS for Scotland. This module offers an insight into the history and development of the Building Control system in Scotland which led to the ‘The Building Scotland Act, 2003’. The module provides an understanding of the role of the Building Standards Division in Scotland and the role of Scottish Ministers. The ‘Procedural Handbook’, which defines the relationship between the general public and Building Control is reviewed in detail. Key aspects of the handbook include the nature and issuing of ‘Building Warrant’, enforcement measures, the issue of dangerous and defective buildings, the nature of certifiers of design and construction and what is meant by a verifier. The module employs a mix of regulatory texts, graphical visualisation, technical drawings and site inspection evidence. Various types of constructions and the issues associated with these types are reviewed for compliance with relevant Sections. In addition, the module covers fire engineering related topics, such as fire and smoke growth, fire resistance, detection and suppression, means of escape, design to improve the fire safety in existing and new buildings.
