School School of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment
Subject area group: Built Environment
Prerequisites

Requisites: AND Pre-requisite: Proficiency with domestic architectural technology AND Pre-requisite: [Module BSV07101] Architectural Technology 1

Description of module content:

This intensive, week-long module is designed to develop students' knowledge and skills in designing architectural solutions for real-world non-domestic construction projects. It promotes innovative thinking with a strong emphasis on sustainability, preparing students for a successful career in Architectural Technology.Assessment is continuous throughout the week and includes progress reviews and student presentations to evaluate students' understanding of non-domestic building design principles. Lectures introduce core concepts, while design studio sessions offer opportunities for discussion, feedback, and the iterative development of design proposals. The module covers key principles of non-domestic building design, exploring topics such as design inspiration, site context analysis, interpretation of client briefs, passive design strategies, geometric form development, circulation planning, integration with the landscape, environmental and material considerations, renewable energy systems, technical drawing production, design visualisation, structural systems, and construction logistics.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Relate the advanced principles of sustainability to building design.

LO2: Apply the fundamentals of activity space, safety and access relating to non domestic building design.

LO3: Outline construction methods and supply chain to achieve non domestic building designs.

LO4: Describe design strategies to reduce energy demand and carbon emissions in non domestic buildings.

LO5: Demonstrate advanced levels of soft skills through presentation of architectural concepts and application of technology.

Student Activity (Notional Equivalent Study Hours (NESH))
Mode of activityLearning & Teaching ActivityNESH (Study Hours)NESH Description
Face To Face Lecture 10 Students will participate in a series of lectures designed to provide essential knowledge and insights that directly support their design projects. These lectures will cover a range of topics, including but not limited to: design strategies for non-domestic buildings, building standards and principles for non-domestic design, occupant needs and considerations, modern methods of construction (MMC), logistics, and more
Face To Face Practical classes and workshops 20 Students will engage in 5 half-day design studio sessions focused on advancing their design projects and receiving in-depth feedback from lecturers. Each session provides ample time for hands-on practice and meaningful interaction. During these workshops, students will refine their design concepts, with an emphasis on sustainability and technology, while benefiting from detailed guidance and constructive feedback from the lecturer.
Online Guided independent study 170 Guided independent study - Design practice Students are expected to dedicate significant time to work on their design projects independently. This involves exploring various possibilities and design scenarios to develop a well-considered and comprehensive version of their work. The most complete iteration should be brought to the design studio sessions for discussion and feedback from the lecturer
