Description of module content:

The module offers an insight into common construction techniques dating from the late 1700’s to the 1960’s. Typically, many of the buildings of this era will need to be adapted / converted in order to meet the needs of contemporary society with its many technical requirements to ensure that buildings, for example, are as energy efficient as possible. This module offers an introduction to the nature of adaptation and conversion of buildings.

The module will provide an introduction to the Building Standards applicable to the adaptation and conversion of buildings. This will go hand-in-hand with a review of the principles of the types of constructions details and specifications regularly used to bring the fabric of an older building closer to achieving current building standards.

Students will be made aware of the many common defects that might be found in older buildings. This module will, in addition, offer a review of remedial actions that might be taken if defects are found to exist in older buildings.

A very important issue in contemporary society is that of the conservation of energy. This module will provide an insight into the issue of providing additional insulation within an older buildings with respect to understanding and reducing condensation risk within the fabric of the building.

It is important that students, in addition to understanding the principles of construction detailing with regard to older buildings, develop the confidence and ability to develop construction details associated with the adaptation and refurbishment of older buildings. This module will offer students the opportunity of developing such construction details from first principles.

Learning Outcomes for module:
