Description of module content:

This module will provide you with an understanding of commercial management principles and practices in the construction industry. These include exploring how external factors, such as economic trends and government policies, impact construction projects and businesses. Also, it will equip you with essential knowledge and skills to navigate the complex commercial environment of quantity surveying.More so, you will gain insights into the diverse range of companies that operate in the industry – including how they are structured and how they secure funding. You will acquire knowledge relating to financial management practices employed by construction firms, including aspects such as budgeting, competition, capital allowances, and tax implications.Upon completing this module, you are expected to possess the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions in a complex commercial environment. You will be capable of analysing economic trends, understanding financial statements, and applying your knowledge to real-world construction projects.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Demonstrate knowledge of the influence of the economy on the construction sector, economic trends in the industry and the economics of development.

LO2: Develop a knowledge of current industry-related initiatives that relate to professional practice and QS-related specialist roles.

LO3: Demonstrate an understanding of commercial organisations and competitive markets; the forms and structures of various company types and how this affects their ability to raise finance.

LO4: Demonstrate an understanding and application of budgeting processes and the financial management of the supply chain.
