Description of module content:

You are expected to acquire basic knowledge and skill set in health and safety in UK. Specifically, much of it will include background to health and safety law in the UK; The Health and Safety at Work Act and the principle health and safety regulations; Institutions of health and safety; Workplace health and safety; Safety in the construction sector; Surveying Safely; Employee rights and health and safety; and Management of health and safety.These will be achieved through lectures spread over a 10 week period punctuated regularly with formative assessment in the form of group discussions, class presentations and individual tutorial sessions that will involve performing some learning tasks in the class. Summative assessment will be in the form of two courseworks to be competed at the 7th and 12th week of the trimester.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of workplace health and safety and its regulatory framework.

LO2: Explain the role of the HSE and its enforcement powers.

LO3: Apply the relevant regulations and appropriate guidance in particular workplace health and safety situations.

LO4: Identify and manage health and safety risks through use of appropriate risk profiling and risk assessment processes.
