Description of module content:

Background to health and safety law in the UK; The Health and Safety at Work Act and the principle health and safety regulations; Institutions of health and safety; Workplace health and safety; Safety in the construction sector; Employee rights and health and safety; Management of health and safety.

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO1: demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of workplace health and safety and its
regulatory framework;
LO2: explain the role of the HSE and its enforcement powers;
LO3: apply the relevant regulations and appropriate guidance in particular workplace
health and safety situations;
LO4: identify and manage health and safety risks through use of appropriate risk profiling
and risk assessment processes.

Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
This shall comprise a lecture of up to 2 hours with a linked 1-hour tutorial, held twice per day over a consecutive five day period. The face-to-face teaching delivered in Week 1 shall be supported by independent guided study and underpinned with work-based learning when back in the office and completing the assessments specified for the module (Weeks 2-15).

The module is taught thematically with each lecture and tutorial providing an opportunity for the student to learn about particular key issues underlying health and safety in the workplace and to develop an appreciation of the issues and strategies to help minimize risks in the workplace.



Formative Assessment:
Students will engage in a number of activities which generate feedback on their progress including informal class tests and quizzes after teaching distinct topics within the syllabus.

Summative Assessment:
The assessments will comprises an Essay to assess outcomes LOs 1-3 and the student will also be required to prepare a Report assessing the safety of a chosen aspect of the employer’s activities addressing outcome LO4
