Timber science & technology
Introduction to sawmilling, machinery & methods; Volume vs value yield; Mechanised grading; Drying technologies & defects.
Engineered wood products & composites; Manufacturing processes; Special properties & uses; MDF, LVL, PSL, hardboard, plywood, finger jointing, glulam; I-beams; Adhesives & binders.
Timber modification; Processes & principals; Modified timbers in construction.
Preservation & decay; Overview of decay types & causes; Natural durability & principals of preservation.
Specification of timber for use in construction.
Performance in fire.
Construction timbers in other parts of the world; Non-visual identification; Timber trade; Global forest types, resources & key commercial uses.



Learning Outcomes for module:

1) Evaluate sawmilling processes and machinery, manufacturing methods for engineered wood products. To discuss implications for the environment.
2) Apply knowledge of the physical and mechanical properties of timbers and engineered timber products in relation to different uses in construction.
3) apply the principles of timber modification and preservation.
4) specify timber and engineered products for a variety of construction uses.
5) Describe and discuss commercial aspects of the international timber trade.
