Description of module content:

This module will introduce you to key developments in the history of screen narrative and some core critical approaches to film and TV analysis, including the study of genre, stardom, audiences and spectatorship, spectacle and consumption, mediation and interface, audio-visual narrative form, transmedia, and more. Following an introduction to the screen itself as a technology and interface for mediating narrative and story-telling, you will learn about the how film became a predominantly narrative medium early in its history, and how conventions of storytelling on the cinema screen emerged. You will then learn about later developments in film technology and culture, and how these contextualise storytelling conventions and film genres. The second half of the module will turn to the emergence of television as a narrative medium, and the historical, cultural, and formal connections and differences between film, television, and new media narrative. Each topic will be presented through a case study of a particular landmark film, television series, and/or other screen-based narrative, enabling you to develop skills in analysing screen-based narrative within the critical frameworks of film and television studies.

Student Activity (Notional Equivalent Study Hours (NESH))
Mode of activityLearning & Teaching ActivityNESH (Study Hours)NESH Description
Face To Face Lecture 10 The weekly 1-hr lectures will introduce the assigned films, and contextualise them historically and culturally. Lectures will present a critical framework for analysis, including introduction of academic discourses from film, television, and media studies.
Face To Face Tutorial 20 The weekly 2-hr tutorials, in smaller group classroom settings, will consolidate and deepen learning that takes place during the lectures, and offer opportunities to practically apply key terms, concepts, and critical frameworks to analysing the assigned films. Tutorials will be student-centered, and make use of mixed teaching and learning methods, such as class discussion, group work, mini-lectures, and practice-based activities designed to develop skills in formal and theoretical analysis.
Online Guided independent study 170 Most of the credit-bearing hours for this module are spent in guided independent study. With the support of assigned reading materials, Moodle study resources, a weekly syllabus, and study skills taught during contact hours, you will manage your independent study time to complete assigned viewing and readings for each week in advance of classes, make notes and annotate texts, do additional recommended reading and research, and plan and produce assessments.

Assessment
Type of Assessment Weighting % LOs covered Week due Length in Hours/Words Description
Portfolio 100 1~2~3~4~5 Week 13 , WORDS= 2500 words You will be assessed on this module by a portfolio of 6 pieces of work, which you will work on throughout the trimester and submit in week 13. The portfolio overall will be 2500 words, or equivalent if working in an audio-visual format (specific equivalencies will be provided in the assessment brief). The 6 portfolio pieces, which are equally weighted within the portfolio, will include: 2 critical analyses of assigned primary texts; 2 screenshot analyses derived from assigned primary texts; 1 reflective mini-essay on your experience of viewing a film as part of an audience, with direct reference to appropriate critical sources; and 1 piece of work in the format of your choice, drawing from a list of options. For each topic week on the module, you will be provided with prompts, from which you can choose one to guide your portfolio piece on that topic. You will be given the option to produce your portfolio pieces in either written or audio-visual formats (e.g. recorded presentations, video recordings, audio logs or podcasts, posters), or a mix of formats. The range of format options offers the opportunity for you to work flexibly and autonomously in keeping with your strengths and interests, and to develop skills in different forms of critical analysis. Regardless of the format you choose, a suitable range of accurately referenced academic research must be used, following specific guidelines in the assessment brief. While there are no separate formative assessment tasks assigned to support the portfolio development, all students will be offered the opportunity to meet with a member of the module teaching staff to share a draft of one portfolio piece, to receive verbal feedback on how their draft work aligns with the assessment criteria, and suggestions for development.
