Description of module content:

Your work in this module will consist of a series of classes and practical workshops in voice, movement and acting designed to test and strengthen vocal, physical and imaginative skills. All of the Voice and Movement modules will be designed to enhance and support the practical work you will be doing elsewhere within the trimester (such as Classical Text Performance). A variety of approaches will be employed with the aim of freeing and enhancing the voice, promoting physical stamina and ease, and stimulating and encouraging imagination and risk-taking. Along with various improvised exercises, you will be working with short texts and excerpts. These exercises will teach you to create and embody different dramatic situations, contexts, narratives and characters. You will encounter exercises that require the ability to identify and exploit the dramatic potential in texts. Through these exercises you will gain skills in acting techniques by which you can develop your emotional, imaginative and intellectual responses. The overall aim in these workshops will be to help you find strong, free and relatively ‘neutral’ physical and vocal expression and to enhance concentration and imagination in a variety of contexts.

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO1: Integrate a number of varied approaches to finding physical, vocal and imaginative freedom and fluidity of expression.
LO2: Communicate effectively your understanding of voice and movement technique.
LO3: Demonstrate originality and creativity in solving performance challenges, particularly with respect to voice and movement.
LO4: Establish a fundamental grasp of a range of physical and vocal warm-up and conditioning skills, and a marked initiative in applying and exercising these skills.
