This module develops your skills as an emerging director by introducing the core principles of staging, rehearsal practice, and creative leadership. In the first half of the trimester, you will build a solid foundation in the fundamentals of directing: analysing action, shaping performance, communicating with actors, planning rehearsals, and making clear stylistic choices. You will learn to take responsibility for the creative and practical demands of a project, exercising autonomy and initiative as you develop your own directorial voice. In the second half of the module, you will apply these skills to the challenge of staging a large cast musical theatre scene, working with singers and actors to create coherent, dynamic ensemble storytelling. By the end of the module, you will be able to plan, lead, and deliver a short directing project with confidence, clarity, and professional rehearsal room practice.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Apply and critically evaluate core directing principles to analyse dramatic action, shape performance, and lead rehearsals with clarity, purpose, and professional practice.

LO2: Exercise autonomy and initiative in developing and communicating creative approaches, making critically informed artistic decisions in response to complex directing challenges.

LO3: Plan, organise, and manage directing projects independently and collaboratively, taking responsibility for scheduling, rehearsal processes, and effective ensemble coordination, and adapting practice as required.

LO4: Apply technical knowledge and production processes effectively, demonstrating a critically informed understanding of how technical elements support and shape directorial intention.

LO5: Integrate visual, aural, musical, and psychophysical elements to create coherent and purposeful theatrical work, demonstrating effective command of large group staging.
