Description of module content:

This module explores the representation of the First World War from its commencement in 1914 to the present day. The module moves chronologically through key representations of the First World War across a wide range of forms: poetry, fiction, the graphic novel, drama, film, and television. Engaging with both canonical texts and works that are non-canonical and/or by marginalised authors, the module tracks the changing memory of the conflict through cultural texts, thinking about these both in terms of what they have to say about the First World War and about the contemporary moment in which they were produced. Pro-war, anti-war and ambivalent texts from authors of various nationalities demonstrate the reification of core myths about the conflict. Theoretical frameworks are provided by engaging with concepts of wartime (including by Mary Dudziak, Mary Favret, Beryl Pong) and memory (e.g. Marianne Hirsch, Dan Todman, Jay Winter) (the former will be familiar to students who took CLP08121 The World at War, although this is not a prerequisite). Students will also be encouraged to research independently and use existing theoretical knowledge and points of interest while reflecting on the way that issues such as gender, sexuality and space are affected by the experience of war.
