Description of module content:

This module will focus on theatre design, on the elements of visual and sound design. You will acquire a knowledge of the history of design in theatre from Greeks to present day. You will critically explore and generate ideas on how to use space, visual and aural elements of theatre language to animate and interpret text and achieve a coherent conceptual vision of that text. Through knowledge, role play and practical application of ideas you will understand how to plan and produce professional standard methodologies from page to stage and be able to engage in creative, critical dialogue with collaborating artists such as composers, set designers, costume designers and other stakeholders in the production process.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Critically assess and recommend solutions for the performance environment that express original, creative vision with regard to the relationship between design and performance.

LO2: Critically explore and produce creative concepts and express those concepts through the elements of scenography, sound and lighting.

LO3: Examine the impact of technical theatre equipment and processes, and lead technical rehearsals.

LO4: Critically reflect on textual and spacial complex issues and produce critically-informed aesthetic judgements to resolve them.

LO5: Examine the impact of design choices on the relationship between audience, actor and performance environment.

Face To Face Seminar 36 The classes will include a combination of knowledge development of and relevant, creative skills. You will explore different models of production and design development methodolgies. Many of the sessions will be interactive with group discussion, role play and similar creative exercises to explore and enhance your understanding of theatre design and develop your ability to critically reflect on your own conceptual and design ideas in aesthetic and practivcal terms.
Online Guided independent study 164 You will engage in appropriate research of both text and concept following appropriate stages of design process. You will also take this opportunity deepen your understanding of physical or electronic full design concepts and the visual and aural expressions of those concepts.

Practical Skills Assessment 50 1~2~3~4~5 Week 13 HOURS= 20 minutes In the second half of the trimester you will work on creating a concept for a Classic play and present this either physically or electronically. This should include aesthetics, physical and aural expressions of that concept.
Practical Skills Assessment 40 1~2~3~4~5 Week 7 HOURS= 20 minutes. In the first half of term you will work on creating a concept for a play and present this to the class and tutors either physically or electronically. This should include aesthetics, physical elements and aural expressions of that concept.
