Description of module content:

This module introduces the ideas that underpin career development work. It draws on psychology and sociology, but assumes no prior knowledge of these disciplines. Career theories will be compared and contrasted. The relationship between theory and practice will be explored. Every opportunity will be taken to relate theory to the work of career development practitioners. You will explore how theory can help in understanding service users, and in devising approaches to guidance and counselling. Units will include: matching theory - developmental theory - structural theory - learning theory - organisational career theory - contemporary theory - and the theory-practice relationship. The module will take place over weeks 2-11 in trimester 1.

LO1: Analyse the main psychological and sociological theories of career development.

LO2: Critically evaluate theories and models of vocational choice and career development.

LO3: Critically explore the implications of theory for professional practice.

Independent Learning On-demand Webinar 10 You will access recorded lectures (2 lectures per week of 30 minutes duration). These will provide an introduction to key theoretical concepts and their relevance to the work of practitioners. These will be available to both part-time/online and full-time students.
Face To Face Tutorial 10 You will participate in face-to-face in-class discussions to further your understanding of career theory concepts. This will include the analysis and critique of readings, and concepts from lecture material.
Online Guided independent study 80 Throughout the trimester, you are expected to structure in time to reflect upon the learning you have undertaken in your scheduled sessions and to complete your essential reading. You are encouraged to read more widely around the topics you are studying and engage in Moodle activities and resources. You will need to ensure that you have sufficient time to prepare and plan for your assessment tasks.
