Description of module content:

This module involves the building the knowledge and competencies to work inclusively with diverse client groups. You will discuss how to respect characteristics (including gender & sexuality, disability, ethnicity/faith, age, and socio-economic background), and to understand what they mean for career. You will become aware of barriers affecting the ability of individuals and groups to access opportunities and progress their career development. You will develop anti-oppressive practices to empower individuals and groups to fulfil their potential. Units will include: social justice in career development - UK equality legislation - class, socio-economic disadvantage and social mobility - gender and sexuality - ethnicity and religion - disability and special educational needs - special populations (e.g. older workers; offenders; veterans) - practice to promote equity, diversity and inclusion. The module will take place over weeks 8 - 14 in trimester 1.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Demonstrate critical awareness of diversity among career service users, and the barriers that individuals and groups may face.

LO2: Critically reflect on own assumptions, values and biases in relation to social justice.

LO3: Develop appropriate interventions to combat oppression, and empower individuals and groups to access opportunities.

Independent Learning On-demand Webinar 6 Two short (30 minute) recorded lectures each week will provide an introduction to key concepts around social justice, equality legislation, and to role of career services in social inclusion.
Face To Face Tutorial 6 For on campus full-time students, face-to-face class discussion with fellow students will further your understanding of concepts in the module and develop insights into your own views and perspectives. Ideas about social justice will be applied to practice.
Online Guided independent study 88 Throughout the trimester, you are expected to structure in time to reflect upon the learning you have undertaken in your scheduled sessions and to complete your essential reading. You are encouraged to read more widely around the topics you are studying and engage in Moodle activities and resources. You will need to ensure that you have sufficient time to prepare and plan for your assessment tasks.
