School School of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment
Subject area group: Built Environment
Prerequisites

Description of module content:

The module focuses on the significance of digitisation and information management in the built environment. It encompasses a broad spectrum of topics about the creation, extraction and management of digital data throughout various stages of construction, starting from site analysis and extending to modelling design, structural systems, material options, and modern construction processes. Within this module, you gain a comprehensive understanding of how digital technologies and tools can enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of structural design within architectural projects. Within your assigned group: you will have to· Decide upon a hypothetical site for an off-gride micro buildings, and detail what site restrictions are present.· Decide upon a floor layout of the off-gride micro building. Each member of the group will select a unique method of construction:· Lightweight timber frame panel (TFP)· Structurally insulated panels (SIPs)· Cross Laminated timber (CLT)· Nail laminated timber (NLT)· Timber Beam and post with lightweight infill panels· Hybrid approach · Each student will complete their design using their selected method of construction. Complete with: o Drawings to be produced Roof plan, floor plan, Elevations, 3D View and Panelised construction drawings o Panel weights will be reported o Cutting lists providedTen weeks of computer class lectures/design tutorials, at 2hr per week. Using SketchUp Pro design software.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Gain an appreciation of dimensional spatial planning data in relation to civil and structural engineering infrastructure.

LO2: Recognise the importance of detailed engineering drawings in the delivery of projects.

LO3: Collect various resources to allow decisions to be made in relation to structural form and contribution to conceptual design.

LO4: Develop an awareness of the integration of structural elements including the effects of construction method of delivery on-site vs off-site construction affecting health, safety and sustainability considerations in the full scale project.
