Design Philosophies and Eurocodes: Permissible stress design; Load factor design; Limit states design; Eurocodes; Eurocode 0
Design Loading (Eurocode 1): Floor load distribution; Dead load; Imposed loads; Snow loads; Wind loads
Flexural Solid Members: Bending; Shear; Bearing; Lateral stability; Notched beams; Deflection; Vibration
Axially Loaded Members: Tension members; Compression members
Members Subject to Combined Axial and Flexural Loads: Combined bending and axial tension; Combined bending and axial compression
Roof Trusses: Roof truss types; Roof truss design (simple forms)

Learning Outcomes for module:

On completion of this module you will be able to:
LO1: understand design principles and differences between the Limit States Design and the Permissible Stress Design methods;
LO2: calculate design loads on timber structures to Eurocodes (EC0, EC1 and EC5);
LO3: analyse and design basic bending members, axially loaded members and members subjected to combined axial and flexural loads;
LO4: analyse and design timber components including floors, load-bearing walls and roof trusses;
LO5: understand and develop knowledge of timber system behaviour using experimental techniques.
