Description of module content:

Unit 1: Design process and design philosophies, Review of Analysis topics
Unit 2: EC0 and EC1: use of Eurocodes for structural design principles and loading,
Unit 3: EC3: Use of Eurocode 3 for the design of structural steelwork: review of material properties, section classification, axially loaded members (in tension and compression).
Unit 4: EC3: Use of Eurocode 3 for the design of structural steelwork: review of design requirements for flexural members.
Unit 5: Elastic instability implications and advanced examples on the design of Lattice girders (part I).
Unit 6: Advanced examples on the design of Lattice girders (part II).
Unit 7: EC3: Flexural and torsional buckling of lattice girders
Unit 8: EC3: In-plane behaviour of thin plates in lattice girders
Unit 9: EC3: Design approach for lattice girders with stiffeners
Unit 10: Fatigue analysis of steel under different loading conditions

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO1: develop an understanding and working knowledge of Eurocodes with respect to steelwork.
LO2: analyze and design lattice girders to Eurocodes using secondary bracing and bending systems. LO3: evaluate structural elements with respect to fatigue loading, as well as various buckling modes, e.g. local, flexural, distortional, lateral torsional, torsional and frames with respect to second-order effects,.
LO4: critically assess structural stability of thin plates subject to various in-plane loading conditions. LO5: analyze and design plate girder and lattice girder elements to Eurocodes

Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
Lectures and tutorials cover the theory, analytical and numerical techniques and applications of Eurocodes to structural steel design (LO1 to LO5). - Directed study tasks encourage integration of key reading material on current developments in analytical/mathematical modelling of steelwork phenomena, e.g. tension field action in thin web plates of plate girders and determination of the critical moment for beams (LO2 to LO5 ).
Module content is developed in consultation with employers. Communication skills are developed through interactive participation by students in class or in VLE environment.

Staff undertake scholarly and research activities on structural analysis and design subjects and relevant research findings are delivered within the module.

Assessment (formative and summative) Assessment is carried out through a sit-in module examination on the design of structural steelwork to Eurocodes EN 1990, EN 1991 and EN 1993 (LO1 to LO5).
