Description of module content:

In this module you will develop foundational skills for professional creativity, as you investigate and examine the cultural worlds surrounding us. By paying close attention to details and moments drawn from everyday life, we can gain new and often surprising knowledge about how our cultural environments are created, sustained, and evolved, and how they in turn shape and change us. Throughout the module tutors will introduce you to a range of chosen cultural artefacts, and you will be tasked to investigate, explore, and respond to the meanings, impacts, and implications of these everyday things. What, for example, do teaspoons, bus-stops, high-heels, viral memes, lightbulbs, motorway signs, reveal to us about contemporary human society? And how can we use this knowledge to inform and fuel our professional creativity? You will explore the changing nature of professional creative work along with key ideas, principles, theories, concepts within your own and related disciplines across design and photography. There will be regular opportunities in class to practice and gain confidence in presenting, to reflect on your progress, and to receive constructive feedback from your peers and tutors. You will demonstrate the knowledge you have gained throughout the module by producing a portfolio of work which presents your reflections on the dynamic and evolving nature of professional creative work.
