School School of Arts and Creative Industries
Subject area group: Art Design and Photography
Prerequisites

There are no pre-requisites for this module to be added

Description of module content:

In Motion Design you will build on your established understanding of principles of graphic design, to now focus on dimensions of time and movement within visual communication. When we add the dimension of time to graphic design, we open up a huge range of possibilities for the visual communication of narratives and information with dynamic motion over duration: the creation of motion graphics. You will learn about foundational principles of animation and moving image design through employing iterative research and development processes to move from analysis and understanding of the brief, to planning, constructing and delivering complete motion graphic outputs which communicate with intended audiences.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Research, analyse and interpret given design briefs through examination of design precedent, social context and culture.

LO2: Implement creative graphic design processes and methods to develop motion design concepts for effectively communicating with intended audiences.

LO3: Apply skills in the use of industry standard motion design tools and processes to produce appropriate motion graphics outputs for delivery to intended audiences.

LO4: Present, analyse and critically reflect on function and effectiveness of design concepts and outcomes at key stages throughout project development.

Student Activity (Notional Equivalent Study Hours (NESH))
Mode of activityLearning & Teaching ActivityNESH (Study Hours)NESH Description
Face To Face Lecture 12 Weekly tutor led lectures and demonstrations will introduce key theoretical, contextual and technical concepts which you will then research further, explore and apply through independent study and coursework assignments.
Face To Face Practical classes and workshops 48 Each week following the tutor led demonstrations and presentations which introduce key concepts and skills, you will then work independently and collectively in class under guidance of tutors to explore and apply these ideas in the context of the coursework assignments. During these practical studio workshop sessions you will iteratively explore, develop and apply theoretical knowledge, contextual understanding, and technical skills.
Online Guided independent study 140 Weekly class activity will provide you with the required skills and starting points for independent study structured around exploring and applying your skills and ideas in relation to the coursework assignments. To support this independent learning, a range of resources are provided through Moodle.

Assessment
Type of Assessment Weighting % LOs covered Week due Length in Hours/Words Description
Portfolio 100 1~2~3~4 Week 14 , WORDS= See description Summative assessment will take place through submission of a portfolio of work containing your responses to all assigned coursework tasks. As a guide, the portfolio will contain final video output of around 3 minutes in length, plus supporting process documentation.Portfolio submission provides an opportunity to demonstrate learning across all learning outcomes for the module. The portfolio is due in week 14. The portfolio will present your account of the tasks you have undertaken throughout the module as you have gained and developed an understanding of motion design practice, along with all required deliverable outputs specified in the coursework briefs. In practice, this might look like a pdf or printed process book presenting the story of your contextual project research, your design development process, one or more motion graphics outputs created according to technical specifications set in the project brief, and your own critical evaluation of the success of this output in meeting the aims of the brief. The student-centred portfolio format allows a degree of personalisation in learning throughout the module as you will be encouraged to select and develop your own areas of interest to explore and critically reflect upon. Submissions will be assessed based on assessment criteria provided within the coursework assignment briefs at the beginning of each project. These assessment criteria are mapped onto the learning outcomes for the module allowing you to clearly demonstrate evidence of achievement of the learning outcomes for the module.
