Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
Learning & teaching methods including their alignment to LOs
Teaching and learning methods adopted will reflect the range of topics and approaches to your design project report. Tutorials, seminars and presentations will explore and develop the capability to research (LO1), evaluate (LO2) and present ideas (LO3,4).
The module handbook facilitates independent learning, by offering supplementary guidance on time-management and methodologies.
Embedding of employability/ PDP/ scholarship skills
The Design Project Report identifies personal methodologies and strategies and develops key transferable skills of critical analysis, and reflective evaluation and enhances verbal and written presentation skills.

Assessment (formative and summative)
Formative assessment includes appraisal of research methods [LO1,3], peer-reviewed iterative presentations [LO1,2], written feedback on draft chapters, and self-evaluation on the extent to which the original learning contract was realized [LO2, 3]. Summative assessment is by double - marked individual Project Report [LO1 - 4] with individual written comments.

Research/ teaching linkages
All team members undertake scholarly activity with design projects and organisations allowing currency and credibility of input. Content is informed by extensive School research in contemporary methods in design research.

Supporting equality and diversity
The module embraces the ideals of equality and diversity. The module content examines design contexts such as design for society, inclusive design and global design. All project notes are available on WebCT to cater for the diverse student group. Timetabled academic supervision is available throughout the module to support students.

Accessibility is built into the module. All module materials (visuals, handouts, WebCT) are designed in line with Napier’s accessibility policy, and guidelines from the British Dyslexia Association and TechDis.

Description of module content:

The module content will largely be determined by each student’s major project topic. Generic elements, however, relating to writing a report of a significant depth of enquiry will be covered. This will include research methods, evaluation, analysis, critical debate, citation, and presentation of findings.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module, you will be able to:
LO 1: Present a critical and thorough appraisal of research methods for creative and critical practice.
LO 2: Critically engage with and illustrate creativity, initiative and analytical rigour in undertaking a reflective evaluation.
LO 3: Plan and undertake a sustained research investigation into a topic in their chosen area(s) of design informed by a detailed review of the relevant literature.
LO 4: Produce and submit a project report setting out research findings and reflective evaluation.
