Description of module content:

This module will arm you with the skills and tools for looking beyond the provision of current services. Over the course of this module, you will learn methods for creating and communicating speculative visions of services for future users. You will also gain an understanding of the importance of these approaches in the service design industry.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to
LO1: A critical understanding of a range of theories, concepts and principles pertaining to speculative design.
LO2: Demonstrate an understanding of the need for and application of speculative and futurescaping methods.
LO3: Apply knowledge and understanding in creating appropriate designed outcomes for diverse cognitive, physical, emotional and moral attributes of people.
LO4: Take significant responsibility for synthesising design activity for external audiences, using semantics, visualisation and storytelling.

Face To Face Practical classes and workshops 20 A series of classes and workshops around future visioning and prototyping. Subjects will include fiction, storytelling, scenarios and storyboards. The classes will discuss and explore the practice of building various prototypes and any unintended consequences that arise from product development. You will receive formative feedback on your work during these sessions.
Face To Face Supervised time in studio/workshop 20 Supervised studio sessions where students develop responses to discussions in the classes. Studio time will involve a series of continuous assessment where students will work towards their summative assessment.
Online Guided independent study 160 In independent study, you will prepare responses to weekly class teaching and develop your assessment and practical work.

Oral Presentation 40 1~2~4 6 HOURS= 5-10 minutes In this presentation, you will demonstrate a specific issue that you have identified and how you will develop a future focused solution to that issue. You will discuss what you expect your final submission to be and how you will work toward the final submission.
Project - Practical 40 1~2~3~4 15 HOURS= N/A Over the course of the module, you will develop and refine a prototype product that a highlights specific issue and future focused responses to that issue. You will present this product with appropriate storyboards and scenario planning. This prototype will be developed in the workshops over the course of the module. Workshops will be used to provide formative feedback.
Oral Presentation 20 1~2~3~4 13 HOURS= 60-180 seconds. You will include a structured narrative based video that introduces your prototype in a fictional environment.
