Description of module content:

This module will familiarise you with the foundational concepts of service design. You will gain an understanding of the key methods and tools used in this discipline, and will begin to practice service design processes and workflows. You will also be introduced to the concept of user experience from a service design perspective.Over the course of this module, you will gain a full understanding of the established processes that lead to designing services for all people including diverse and marginalised members of the community.This module considers the touch points with and between people and how they may want and should be able to interact with a service. You will be introduced to the theory of value, how value is understood by differing users and stakeholders and how value in and across systems can be co-created.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Demonstrate knowledge that covers and integrates the main areas of the service design discipline including its features, boundaries, terminology and conventions.

LO2: Apply a significant understanding of the principles of iterative, evidence-based and reflective processes in creative and responsible problem solving the practice of being a responsible professional.

LO3: Develop the creative capacity to interpret, respond to and mitigate ambiguous and bounded problems.

LO4: Effectively communicate issues and solutions highlighted by service design methods, to a range of audiences with different levels of knowledge and expertise persuasively and meaningfully.

Face To Face Lecture 20 A series of lectures that include an introduction to methods and tools employed in the practice of service design. Subjects covered will include theory of value, understanding and planning for positive user experience and design communication.
Face To Face Practical classes and workshops 20 A series of practical classes and workshops that respond to material covered in the lecture. The focus of these classes will be the practical application of theory covered in the lectures. In these workshops you will work toward your final assessment receiving feedback as you develop your responses.
Online Guided independent study 160 Guided independent study around the literature presented in class and preparing for and responding to weekly tutorials.
