Prerequisites

There are no pre-requisites for this module to be added

Description of module content:

In this module you will learn advanced methods of design research. The module will focus on conducting ethical human-centred evaluative research to improve the provision of designed outcomes. Module content will include Evaluative Methods and Usability Testing. You will gain an appreciation of statistical data and quantitive analysis as well as the application of qualitative Analysis, when these methods are appropriate and how they might complement each other.Over the course of the module you will learn the theory and application of a number of methods that you will be expected to use in your future working life. Learning on this module is undertaken in the studio and you will develop your assessments in class over the course of the module, receiving formative feedback in class. You will use your learning to engage with and select a research study to undertake. You will then undertake the proposed study and report on your experience and any discoveries from both undertaking and performing evaluation in the module.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to
LO1: Demonstrate a critical understanding of how to identify and select relevant theories and methods of contextual research appropriate for different stages within a design process.
LO2: Demonstrate an understanding of the use of statistical analysis in the practice of quantitative research.
LO3: Display an ability to review, consolidate and extend practices and thinking in user evaluation.
LO4: Deal with complex issues and make informed judgements in situations in the absence of complete or consistent evaluation data/information.
LO5: Communicate inferences drawn from and strategies designed using appropriate human centred evaluation methods, to a range of audiences with different levels of knowledge/expertise persuasively and meaningfully.

Student Activity (Notional Equivalent Study Hours (NESH))
Mode of activityLearning & Teaching ActivityNESH (Study Hours)NESH Description
Face To Face Lecture 20 Face to face lectures discussing the application of research methods to implement iterative, evidence-based and reflective processes in creative and responsible problem solving. As well as extending your repertoire of research methods, this module will help with understanding statistical data from qualitative analysis.
Face To Face Practical classes and workshops 20 Practical classes and workshops that cover the application of the learning and teaching conducted in the lectures. Students will be challenged with case studies and practice data sets and expected to draw inferences and effectively communicate these inferences to their peers. These classes will be used to develop assessments over time allowing for formative feedback.
Online Guided independent study 160 Independent study including the literature highlighted in the course of the module and responding to and preparing for weekly practicals and workshops.
