Description of module content:

In this module you will be exploring aspects of learning design and open education practices. Based very much on your own context, you will be considering the constraints and requirements of designing learning within your role and explore opportunities for the use of open education resources. You may also draw on your own institution's strategies, policies and procedures or wider context of national legislation, standards and frameworks. Developing areas which you have already touched on in previous modules, such as accessibility and usability, intellectual property, open access and copyright, you can pursue your own interests within the module activities and assessments. You will develop hands-on experience of evaluation of online CPD provision in an open course, aiding and enhancing your own professional development.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Critically analyse blended and online learning design and development, taking into account key concepts within this and previous modules.

LO2: Critically reflect on how your experience from the perspective of an online learner informs your design and development of blended and online learning.

LO3: Design and develop a small-scale blended or online learning experience using evidence-informed approaches according to the constraints and requirements of your context.

LO4: Critically engage with open education practices and reflect on their use in your context.

Student Activity (Notional Equivalent Study Hours (NESH))
Mode of activityLearning & Teaching ActivityNESH (Study Hours)NESH Description
Independent Learning Guided independent study 9 You will be supported in your learning through asynchronous activities with your peers on the module. This will take the form of posts and comments to online discussions and collaborative boards. Engaging with these activities through sharing your own ideas and experiences will help refine your ideas in preparation for the assessment submissions. Responding to your peers posts, you will learn about different approaches and contexts to your own, developing transferable knowledge in the process.
Independent Learning GROUPIND_STUDY 10 Participate in an Open Online Learning Course. For the activity in this unit you are tasked with finding and participating in an open online course (e.g. a MOOC) in a topic of your choosing, which you expect may contribute to your professional development.
Independent Learning Seminar 11 Webinar: You will participate in a number of webinars throughout the module, to support your learning. These are opportunities to ask us for help but also to share with each other your findings or progress.
Online Guided independent study 170 As part of your guided independent study, you will undertake the Self Study Unit of this module and read beyond the prescribed list to explore literature relevant to your project. As you progress through the module, you will be encouraged to keep in mind that you are both an online educator and an online learner. Let your learning experience inform your learning design project, and do think back to the lessons learned in the previous modules as you design your unit of learning.

Assessment
Type of Assessment Weighting % LOs covered Week due Length in Hours/Words Description
Report 40 1~2~4 Week 11 , WORDS= 1000words/6mins For this assessment, you will identify, join and participate in an open online course which you anticipate will be able to support your professional development in blended and online education. You will share your experiences of this course in a series of forum/noticeboard posts and discuss these with peers in webinars. You will then critically evaluate the design of the course, with reference to both the literature and reflections on your experience as a student on the course, addressing issues relating to advantages and disadvantages of open online courses and compare with other learning networks and communities as discussed in the Self Study Unit. You can choose to submit your critique as a 1000-word (maximum) document or a 6-minute (maximum) multimedia presentation (e.g. podcast, screencast, narrated powerpoint).
Report 60 1~3~4 Week 13 , WORDS= 1500 words You will develop a small scale blended or online course or unit roughly equivalent to 3 - 4 weeks of part-time study activity for learners in your context. You will then provide a written critical report of your design which justifies your pedagogic design and choice of technologies. You should address how you approached your design in light of the constraints and requirements of your context and include details of you have or plan to evaluate it. Your design should incorporate open education practices, which can include the re-use and adaptation of open resources and/or the open sharing and licencing of your materials; your report should include a reflection on this. Your report should be 1500 words, this should be accompanied by a recorded virtual tour (up to 6 minutes) of the course or unit you have developed. You are advised to keep your own copy of the assessments.
