Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
Learning & teaching methods including their alignment to LOs
Students will be taught in interactive groups. Graphical calculators will be used to enhance the teaching and learning. For part of the student centred learning computer based assessments will be available to allow students plenty of practice on Foundation Mathematics. Weekly tutorial handouts are an integral part of the module.

Embedding of employability/ PDP/ scholarship skills
The module will be relevant to all engineering programmes and hence will show the use of several engineering disciplines. Engineers are required to have a good understanding of mathematics and using it in real engineering examples is a real motivating factor. On completion of this module the students will begin to be able to solve engineering problems using mathematics with confidence. This will make them more employable.

Research/ teaching linkages
The emphasis of this module is to learn by investigating results, observing patterns, visualizing graphs and using technology. The teaching team undertake scholarly activity and attend events which keep them up to date with the subject material. The students are asked to research current practice in the subject as part of their directed, independent learning.

Supporting equality and diversity
Booklets on Foundation Mathematics and Calculus are available for extra support. These booklets were written by members of the mathematics group especially for students experiencing difficulties with mathematics in their first year. MathsPlus sessions are available four times a week to students, where mathematics lecturers provide extra help on a one-to-one basis or to small groups of students.

Formative Assessment:
Weekly tutorial sheets.

Summative Assessment:
1. Complex Numbers Test
2. Foundation Mathematics Test
3. Calculus Test
4. Vector and Descriptive Statistics Test

All assessments will be by class tests to encourage students to develop study skills. The first assessment will be in week 4.
