School School of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment
Subject area group: Engineering and Mathematics
Prerequisites

There are no pre-requisites for this module to be added

Description of module content:

Aims and objectives: To teach the basic topics of engineering mathematics. You will gain familiarity with foundational applied/engineering mathematics concepts, including revision of concepts which are expected to be known from school or college. You will develop or refresh your mathematical fluency, solidify your grasp of these concepts, and be brought to a common level. In additional to the mathematical content, you will learn to reason mathematically, solve problems, and write mathematics in a clear and logical manner.Content from: This module comprises four main topics:1. Foundation Mathematics including algebra, functions and their graphs2. Complex numbers in Cartesian, Polar and Exponential forms3. An introduction to vectors, assisted by suitable software4. Basic concepts from calculus, namely differentiation and integration, with engineering applications. You will be supported to operate at SCQF level 7, the level at which Scottish degree programmes begin, which may be a step above what you seen at school or college. Through an enhanced module, you will be supported to transition to working at this level over the course of the trimester.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Demonstrate competence with basic mathematical algebraic and arithmetic operations, including rearranging formulae and being conversant with logarithmic-, exponential- and trigonometric-functions.

LO2: Manipulate complex numbers in Cartesian, Polar and Exponential form.

LO3: Demonstrate competence expressing and manipulating vectors in Cartesian and Polar Form, and have a basic understanding of the use of computer programming in a suitable language to perform these operations.

LO4: Perform basic differentiation and integration including engineering applications.
