Timetables
Description of module content:

In this module you will study a range of concepts, methods, standards and technologies including:Free space propagation calculations appropriate to satellite and line of sight links (FSPL and noise); design of high gain and low noise amplifiers using Smith Charts; Typical system components in microstrip and waveguide; Optical fibre as a waveguide; Practical aspects of optical fibre communications: protecting fibres, connections, white noise, calculating noise and error of an optical fibre link; Dispersion and dispersion compensation schemes; Power budgeting; Optical/electrical interfacing; Optoelectronic devices.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Analyse and estimate Signal to Noise ratio for a range of line of sight wireless links.

LO2: Recommend appropriate low noise or high gain front end MESFET amplifiers through critical analysis.

LO3: Critically explore and evaluate the operation of a range of HF/microwave communication system components.

LO4: Examine the elements of and critically assess attenuation and link length limits in fibre optic channels.

LO5: Analyse and critically appraise the ability of systems to transmit the required data rate via a fibre optical communication channel.

LO6: Conceptualise the design and operation of optoelectronic devices for communication purposes.
