Description of module content:

The module aims to provide a five-week induction period to international students preparing to begin their undergraduate studies as part of the cohort commencing in January each academic year. The students are introduced to the culture of higher education in Scotland generally and at Edinburgh Napier University in particular. They learn about the structure of an undergraduate programme and the expectations that staff will have of them, for example, in adhering throughout to good and acceptable academic practice. They will be able to familiarise themselves with the College and its processes, around attendance at and engagement in classes, for example, as well as becoming used to the University environment and to the city of Edinburgh. There will be a focus on the study skills required to achieve success in university studies and delivery in English together with immersion in the local environment will aid students in the development of their English skills and help them build their confidence. Although the aim of the course is to provide generic support to students, there will be opportunities for them to join classes to sample the delivery methods associated with their own particular specialised fields of study. Throughout formative assessments will monitor student progress, provide opportunities for constructive and supportive feedback and encourage the students as they face the prospect of beginning their subject studies proper in January. The overriding aim is to create an engaged community of students who feel connected to the College and the University and embark with greater understanding and confidence on the next substantive stage of their studies.
