Description of module content:

Students are given a brief introduction to the historical development of the study of Psychology and become familiar with a range of approaches, cognitive, behavioural, psychodynamic, biological/medical and evolutionary. Key psychological theories are placed in the context of healthcare. The focus moves to psychological aspects relevant to healthcare. The students learn to recognise patient attitudes and responses to physical illness and to understand how depression and anxiety can influence patient behaviour, for example, in ‘white coat syndrome’.The biopsychosocial framework is explained which helps students understand the interrelation between physical, mental and social/cultural factors in influencing patient behaviour. Cultural perspectives, for example, values, beliefs, lifestyle practices often determine patients’ thinking and actions around healthcare, including reactions to health promotion and illness prevention programmes. The interplay between mental and physical is considered in relation to both mental and physical illnesses and how to respond to patients in stressful circumstances.

Student Activity (Notional Equivalent Study Hours (NESH))
Mode of activityLearning & Teaching ActivityNESH (Study Hours)NESH Description
Face To Face Seminar 55 The focus is on interactive small classes. Tutors introduce topics on the study of Psychology and then applying their learning to the healthcare context. Learning is reinforced through demonstrations, discussions, Q&A, and brief tasks to assess understanding. Workshops deepen comprehension, encouraging collaboration in pairs or groups, culminating in plenaries to review group work. Brief quizzes or tests are set for practice and feedback.
Online Guided independent study 11 Support sessions are available to students who wish to receive further guidance on topics, concepts or practical skills/activities which they find difficult. Sessions may be led by college support team. They take the form of weekly face to face work or online, supported by additional on line material available via Moodle. These support sessions also develop student knowledge and understanding of issues around employability and career development in the professional contexts studied.
Online Guided independent study 99 Students will have tasks set them as preparation for seminars and workshop sessions, including background reading from recommended texts and articles which help them be ready for detailed consideration of upcoming topics. Students are expected to come to seminars with reading notes and prepare practical tasks. Students are encouraged to make use of material available on the VLE and elsewhere to encourage them to individualise their learning and develop as autonomous learners.
Online Guided independent study 35 Preparation for assignments set as part of the formative assessment through which students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of topics studied and on which they are able to receive detailed and supportive feedback from their tutors and fellow students. Absorption and careful consideration of this feedback is an important part of this activity.
