Description of module content:

This module introduces students to Sociology as the study of society and its component parts and how it – and they - function. There is a brief introduction to the history of and main theories associated with the field. The significance of class, gender and ethnicity within societies and studies into them is emphasised.Students are shown how the divides within society may impact on the health and well-being of its different groups of members. They are shown how health may be viewed differently between different groups and they may vary too in the priority they accord steps taken to improve the health of communities through proactive measures to prevent illness and disease. Differences within society can be evidenced through patterns of healthiness or of incidence of illnesses. Cultural differences within societies can also be seen to impact on levels of illness through variations in life-styles.The sociology of health facilitates the placing of humans within wider social, cultural, economic, political and environmental contexts and show how differences within society can be seen to impact both on healthcare provision and its priorities and on the range and seriousness of illnesses that healthcare professional may encounter in their work.

Face To Face Seminar 55 The focus is on interactive small classes. Tutors introduce topics on the study of Sociology and then applying their learning to the healthcare context. Learning is reinforced through demonstrations, discussions, Q&A, and brief tasks to assess understanding. Workshops deepen comprehension, encouraging collaboration in pairs or groups, culminating in plenaries to review group work. Brief quizzes or tests are set for practice and feedback.
Online Guided independent study 11 Support sessions are available to students who wish to receive further guidance on topics, concepts or practical skills/activities which they find difficult. Sessions may be led by college support team. They take the form of weekly face to face work or online, supported by additional on line material available via Moodle. These support sessions also develop student knowledge and understanding of issues around employability and career development in the professional contexts studied.
Online Guided independent study 99 Students prepare for seminars and workshop sessions. These involve background reading from recommended texts and articles which help them prepare for upcoming topics. Students are expected attend seminars with notes taken from the preparatory reading. Students are encouraged to make use of material available on the VLE and elsewhere to encourage them to individualise their learning and develop as autonomous learners.
Online Guided independent study 35 Preparation for assignments set as part of the formative assessment through which students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of topics studied and on which they are able to receive detailed and supportive feedback from their tutors and fellow students. Absorption and careful consideration of this feedback is an important part of this activity.
