Description of module content:

The module aims to introduce students to the definitions and development of the HRM function and provides and overview of the range of areas in which it can make a contribution to the management of an organisation. It highlights the way in which these have been adapted or developed to meet the changing needs of organisations in recent years. The module has three main areas of focus; the first surrounds exploring the HRM function in organisations whilst looking at the different stakeholder perceptions and how the function affects them. Secondly it examines how a HR department can manage employee resourcing and all that is involved within this with the focus being on employee recruitment and selection processes and the practical application of these practices; finally the module evaluates employee training and development strategies by considering the many different options that are available to organisations and exploring the process through which they make these decisions in practice.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Explain the concept of human resource management (HRM) and identify the major trends affecting the HR profession.

LO2: Examine the role played by HR specialists and line managers in people management strategies in a range of organisations.

LO3: Evaluate the main models and methods adopted in employee resourcing with particular focus on recruitment and selection and assess the impact of these processes on organisational success.

LO4: Describe the systematic process of training and development and identify the extent to which this influences the performance of individuals within the organisation.

Face To Face Seminar 92 The seminars focus on the theory and practice of the human resource department and place its activities in the wider context of the business. The topics studied in the seminars are reinforced as students work both individually and in groups in the workshop sessions. This encourages team work and communication skills through a range of tasks and activities - such as case studies, individual activities, group discussions with feedback, and role playing.
Online GROUPSCHEDULED 30 Preparation for assignments set as part of the formative assessment through which students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of topics studied and on which they are able to receive detailed and supportive feedback from their tutors and fellow students. Absorption and careful consideration of this feedback is an important part of this activity. Summative assessments are prepared for in the same way at key times during the terms of study and at the end of the module.
Face To Face Project Supervision 20 Additional support sessions provide help in developing academic literacy skills and exercises are set and discussed on academic referencing practice. Other sessions, while more subject specific, develop academic literacy skills by encouraging students to understand, explain and summarise the theoretical and practical material. The sessions also sharpen student focus on issues around employability and career development.
Online Guided independent study 58 Students will have tasks set them as preparation for seminars and workshop sessions. These typically involve background reading from recommended texts and articles which help them be ready for detailed consideration of upcoming topics. Students are also set shorter-term assignments encourages weekly reading and research to take place, and provides regular opportunities for supportive formative feedback. Students are expected to come to seminars with notes taken from the preparatory reading set
