Description of module content:

This module aims to equip you with the necessary knowledge and tools to critically understand and appraise complex issues surrounding data governance and ethics of organisations. You will learn how organisations establish data procedures to potentially harness data power whilst adhering to data regulations and aligning with ethical principles in the wider society. Given the changing context of technological development and digital transformation, the module will also enable you to identify the potential implications of big data and artificial intelligence for data governance and ethics.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Analyse and discuss key elements when establishing data procedures in organisations

LO2: Evaluate the ethical aspects of data collection, storage and usage such as the fairness and accountability in data-driven products/services, based on major ethical theories

LO3: Critically interpret relevant regulatory frameworks and potentially apply international standards to contemporary data governance and ethics of organisations

LO4: Critically appraise data governance and ethics in diverse contexts of organisations and societies and provide recommendations for organisational growth and change

Face To Face Tutorial 20 10 x two-hour tutorials to instruct critical reading and reflection on the practical application of theories. These will serve to reinforce and clarify concepts, providing a space for collaborative discussion and application of your independent learning.

Oral Presentation 40 1~2~3 Week 7 HOURS= 15-20 minutes You will work in groups to analyse academic articles focusing on data governance and ethics. All groups will present and discuss these articles in depth during the literature seminar. You will also be asked to submit a copy of the presentation and discussion details, such as slides with presenting notes.
Report 60 1~2~3~4 Exam Period , WORDS= 2500 words You will select a case (e.g. a public/private/civic organisation) to analyse relevant issues relating to data governance and ethics in a consulting report. The report should be grounded in theories and actionable recommendations.
