Description of module content:

Field Methods in Wildlife Biology and Conservation (on campus) builds upon the foundational knowledge and skills acquired in Species Identification Skills. This module focuses on advanced techniques used in wildlife biology and conservation by studying diverse population monitoring and ecological sampling tools. You will further develop practical skills in the field and lab settings, gaining hands-on experience with advanced research methods commonly employed in wildlife biology and conservation.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Critically evaluate and apply a range of field methodologies used in wildlife biology and conservation.

LO2: Make informed judgements of alternative field study designs, including sampling techniques, data collection, data management and summary statistics.

Face To Face Lecture 8 Lectures will introduce the main topics and will serve as a preparation for the related fieldwork and workshop sessions.
Face To Face Fieldwork 16 Practical field sessions to collect the data linked to previous lecture and in preparation of the following workshop.
Face To Face Practical classes and workshops 10 Data management and generation of descriptive statistics from field work carried out. Also includes a feedforward session for assessment.
Online Guided independent study 66 Throughout the trimester, you are expected to structure in time to reflect upon the learning you have undertaken in your scheduled sessions and to complete your essential reading. You are encouraged to read more widely around the topics you are studying and engage in Moodle activities and resources. You will need to ensure that you have sufficient time to prepare and plan for your assessment tasks.

Learning Log 100 1~2 Week 13 HOURS= 1500 words Each fortnight you will submit a 500-word learning log entry in which you will: (i) reflective critically on the field activities you have carried out, including on your own learning and identification of potential biases of the methods used and alternatives and (ii) produce a table or graph with appropriate caption summarizing the field data you collected combined with any appropriate summary statistics. You will submit three learning log entries in total.
