Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
This module is delivered in face to face mode. The lectures are delivered by an Edinburgh Napier University Lecturer in a 5 session, 15 hour block (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Monday, Tuesday). Local tutors deliver tutorial sessions weekly.

Lectures will provide you with an overview of key issues and concepts in order to guide your individual reading and research (LO1 to LO6). Tutorials will reinforce learning by providing opportunities for you to ask questions and seek further clarification on aspects of the module and for general discussion of relevant topical issues. The tutorials will also give you opportunities to develop a range of interpersonal and communicative skills through a programme of predominantly student-led activities, such as question and answer sessions, discussion of relevant topical issues and seminars directed at developing skills in group-work.

You will be directed to relevant reading for private study and research. You will also be expected to use academic journals, periodicals and official publications, whether taken in hard copy in the Library or via the wide range accessible in electronic journal form (see reading list), to augment their learning.


Formative Assessment:
Formative assessment incorporates an essay of around 2,000 words which covers learning outcomes 1 to 6 and is submitted in week 7

Summative Assessment:
Summative assessment is an end of semester examination covering all learning outcomes of the module.

Description of module content:

Financial system: functions, structure, intermediaries and globalisation
Interest rates: theory, determinants of supply and demand, equilibrium rates, policies
Financial markets: money, bond, equity and derivative markets, integration, infrastructures
Financial Institutions: insurance, savings, investment, asymmetric information, moral hazard interest
Modern Banks: organisational structure, activities, risks, regulation, failures, competitive issues

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO1: Critically analyse the roles and functions of organised financial markets and financial intermediaries
LO2: Discuss implications regulation and government intervention in financial markets
LO3: Compare and contrast the major theories of determining the general level of interest rate
LO4: Discuss the reasons for diversification in the financial institutions industry and evaluate different banking structures
LO5: Compare the main approaches to the management of risk by banks and other financial institutions and the scope and necessity for regulation of the financial systems, nationally and internationally
LO6: Critically analyse the processes of innovation and globalisation in the financial system and consider their implications to the banking industry and analyse the determinants for the failure of bank and their influence on the financial crisis
